The Upside Down House

A big day yesterday.  The last big structural pieces were dropped (dexterously placed) into place.  Not many words for this one, just a series of photos which (hopefully) speak for themselves. Suffice to say, the kids enjoyed this one…

How it looked after the scaffolding barrier came down, before the steel went in.

The delivery was later than expected and might not have turned up at all without some gentle persuasion from Jon.   The combined length of the low-loader and the crane lorry caused some challenges for drivers for an hour or so afer school pick-up (sorry).

To stop the steel turning turtle, the hoist was fastened to the uprights with a pair of trusty zip-ties.

Our choice of brown-grey powder coating was aimed at bridging the colour divide between the anthracite roof/ windows and the green and brown of the garden.  We sensed it might have raised an eyebrow or two with the architects, but we’re really pleased with how it turned out.

These two are taken fom the back of the crane lorry.  Getting a bit nerdy for a moment, apparently it’s got a 28 metre reach… We only needed 20 metres.

The final piece of the jigsaw.  The dry-fit in the sleet at the start of February was well worth the effort; the three pieces slotted together with precision and the drill holes lined-up perfectly.  Hats off to the team at Ashdown Steel – we know it wasn’t easy!

The finished article; inspired by a picture on Houzz, interpreted by CDMS into a design that could be built by Ashdown Steel and installed by Brickhurst.  (We think) It complements the house beautifully and adds some much needed interest to the older part of the house.

 

P.S. (for those of you still reading!) There should be another post in the next few days about the completion of the deck and glass at the rear. The photos of that one won’t be taken until the weekend, as the scaffolding is booked to come down on Thursday.
